🧭 Personal Philosophy & Quotes

Stewardship. Discipline. Be ready to say no — and ready to act.

Abel is the first person since 1965 to hold Berkshire's top job who is not Warren Buffett — and his philosophy, stated in his first shareholder letter (Feb 2026), is explicit stewardship: 'Your capital is commingled with ours, but it does not belong to us. Our role is stewardship.' He codified Berkshire's values (decentralisation, integrity, financial strength, capital discipline, risk management, operational excellence), kept the fortress balance sheet — and then, strikingly, spent: ~$20bn of net equity buying in a single quarter of 2026, a homebuilder acquisition, and resumed buybacks. For investors: continuity of system, with a more operational, hands-on allocator than Buffett's telephone-era style.

Operating principles

  • Stewardship: the capital is the owners', not ours
  • Fortress balance sheet — never be beholden to anyone
  • Discipline to say no; decisiveness when the pitch is right
“Our balance sheet is a strategic asset to be deployed at the right time. It allows us to act decisively, invest when others are tentative or fearful, and stand firm when financial storms roll through.”
— First annual letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders, Feb 2026
“A lot of people have this urgency to act. You have to be disciplined and ready to say no.”
— Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting, May 2026 (via Money)

Overview

An Edmonton accountant who audited a geothermal company, joined it, and ended up running Berkshire Hathaway. Abel built Berkshire Hathaway Energy into one of America's largest utility groups, was named vice chair for non-insurance operations in 2018, was publicly anointed by Charlie Munger (2021), and became CEO on 1 January 2026 — the first leadership change at Berkshire since Buffett took control in 1965. Buffett remained chairman until Sep 2026, when he became chairman emeritus.

Education

  • Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) — University of Alberta (1984)
  • Chartered Accountant / CPA (AICPA)

Personal Likes & Life

  • Grew up in a working-class Edmonton neighbourhood; worked as a labourer and filled fire extinguishers in high school and college
  • Named to the Horatio Alger Association (2018); long based in Des Moines, Iowa, where MidAmerican is headquartered
  • Famously interview-shy for two decades — profiled as the 'quiet' successor; his annual letters and meeting Q&As are now his main public voice

Past Experience

1984–1992 — PricewaterhouseCoopers
Chartered accountant in Edmonton, then San Francisco — where geothermal producer CalEnergy was a client.
1992–2008 — CalEnergy → MidAmerican Energy
Joins CalEnergy (1992); president from 1999 as it becomes MidAmerican Energy Holdings and Berkshire takes control; CEO in 2008, later chairman of the renamed Berkshire Hathaway Energy.
2018 — Vice Chair, Berkshire Hathaway
Puts him over all non-insurance businesses — the vast majority of Berkshire's operating earnings.
1 Jan 2026 — President & CEO, Berkshire Hathaway
Board votes unanimously (May 2025) on Buffett's recommendation; writes his first shareholder letter in Feb 2026 and leads his first annual meeting that May.

🏆 Achievements

  • A flawless-succession first year: Berkshire stock hit record highs in Oct 2026 as investors warmed to the handover
  • Put the fortress to work: roughly $20bn of net stock purchases in Q2 2026 (Alphabet built toward a ~$36.6bn position), the $6.8bn Taylor Morrison acquisition, and $4.5bn+ of buybacks resumed
  • Skin in the game: personally bought 21 Berkshire Class A shares (~$730,000 each) in Mar 2026

⚠️ Failures & Setbacks

  • The inheritance problem: a ~$370–400bn cash pile and a stock that lagged the S&P 500 in 2025 as the succession discount set in — his to fix, but priced against him from day one
  • Kraft Heinz (a Buffett–3G era deal) remains Berkshire's most-cited capital-allocation mistake, and Abel's letters now use it as the cautionary example he must live down
  • The comparison trap: every decision is graded against a 60-year legend who is still in the building as chairman emeritus
Analyst take: The steward • Buffett's system, Abel's energy — tenure first year as ceo puts Greg among S&P 500's defining leaders of the current cycle.
