🧭 Personal Philosophy & Quotes

Wherever commerce moves next, Visa's rails should carry it.

McInerney's decade as Visa's president taught him the network is the product: whoever defines the trusted standard for a new form of commerce — tap-to-pay, account-to-account, stablecoins, AI agents buying on your behalf — collects the toll. His philosophy is anticipatory ubiquity: move with every technology shift early, partner with the disruptors rather than fight them, and keep trust (fraud protection, dispute rights, verified identity) as the moat. For investors, he frames Visa less as a card network than as a 'hyperscaler' selling a service stack on top of its rails.

Operating principles

  • Move with every shift in commerce — early
  • Trust is the product; the network is the toll road
  • Sell the stack, not just the swipe
“Whenever technology changes commerce, we move with it, we anticipate what's next, and we enable its growth as the leading hyperscaler of payments globally.”
— Visa quarterly results statement, Oct 2026
“We have deep conviction in our ability to grow revenue well into the future, not just for the next three to five years, but beyond.”
— Visa fiscal Q2 2026 earnings call, Apr 2026

Overview

McInerney had one of the longest CEO apprenticeships in corporate America: ten years as Visa's president running its global business before stepping up in February 2023. Before Visa he ran JPMorgan Chase's entire consumer bank — 75,000 employees — and helped launch its first mobile banking product.

Education

  • B.S. Finance — University of Notre Dame (1997)

Personal Likes & Life

  • Notre Dame trustee (from 2024) and chair of the US–China Business Council in 2026 — led its delegation to meet Premier Li Qiang
  • Michigan native of Irish heritage (family from Counties Clare and Tipperary); married with three children
  • Public persona is deliberately product-focused: investor days and product drops over personality profiles

🏆 Achievements

  • Kept Visa compounding through the post-pandemic travel cycle — fiscal Q2 2026 delivered the strongest net revenue growth since 2013 (excluding the recovery and Visa Europe effects)
  • Reframed the growth story around value-added services, Visa Direct and B2B 'new flows' rather than card volume alone
  • Positioned Visa inside the stablecoin and AI-agent commerce build-out with partnerships across OpenAI, Microsoft, Anthropic and Stripe

⚠️ Failures & Setbacks

  • The US Justice Department sued Visa (Sep 2024) alleging it monopolised debit networks — the defining legal fight of his tenure
  • The Plaid acquisition ($5.3bn) was abandoned in 2021 under DOJ pressure during his presidency of the business
  • European and global 'payments nationalism' — domestic schemes and account-to-account systems (Pix, UPI, FedNow) keep chipping at the card model he must out-run
Analyst take: Network strategist • 'Hyperscaler of payments' — tenure 3 yrs as ceo puts Ryan among Dow Jones's defining leaders of the current cycle.
