🧭 Personal Philosophy & Quotes
Petz leads a 160-year-old coatings empire with a leadership-studies degree and an operator's bluntness: when a quarter's sales failed to convert to earnings in Q3 2026, she said so on the call — 'below our standards' — and promised urgency. Her philosophy is customer-proximity plus self-awareness: Sherwin-Williams wins by controlling its own stores, solving contractors' productivity problems, and taking share in down cycles so it emerges stronger. For investors, she is the continuity candidate with a candour premium — the model (store control, pricing discipline, buybacks) is unchanged; the test is execution through a weak housing cycle.
Operating principles
- Admit the miss plainly; act with urgency
- Win share in the downturn, harvest in the recovery
- Control the channel — stores are the moat
“We acknowledge that the sales to earnings conversion in the quarter was below our standards, and we will continue to act with urgency to drive greater efficiency throughout the organization.”— Sherwin-Williams Q3 2026 earnings call, Oct 2026
“Our third quarter sales performance reflects the strength of our strategy and the value customers are placing on our products and services.”— Sherwin-Williams Q3 2026 results statement, Oct 2026
Overview
Sherwin-Williams' tenth CEO in 160 years — and its first woman in the job — Petz didn't climb the company's own ladder from the bottom; she arrived through an acquisition (Valspar, 2017) and then ran, in turn, its consumer brands, its Americas paint stores and the whole company as president and COO before taking the top job on 1 January 2024 and the chair a year later.

⚠️ Failures & Setbacks
- Earnings quality wobbles: Q3 2026 profit slipped despite 7.9% sales growth — a conversion miss she publicly owned
- Legacy lead-paint litigation and abatement liabilities remain a long-tail legal overhang for the industry she leads
- The housing cycle is her ceiling: with US single-family housing starts depressed, even flawless execution caps segment volume growth
